Hi, I’m Chloe May!
I’m a political science student at UC Berkeley with a deep passion for constitutional law, civic engagement, and secular advocacy. I was recently awarded a scholarship from the Secular Student Alliance and invited to attend their national summer conference in Cincinnati this July!
My interest in secular issues began with my senior capstone project, where I researched how recent Supreme Court decisions have weaponized the First Amendment’s religious clauses—particularly how the Free Exercise Clause has been used to justify discrimination and erode the Establishment Clause. That research sparked my commitment to defending the separation of church and state and uplifting evidence-based policy.
At UC Berkeley, I’ve continued this work by staying involved in civic life and legal advocacy. I’m eager to meet other student leaders at the SSA Conference, sharpen my organizing skills, and represent California in conversations that shape the future of the secular movement.
Any support you can offer—no matter how small—will help cover the costs of travel, lodging, and conference registration. Thank you for believing in young leaders and helping make opportunities like this possible!
The Secular Student Alliance conference is the largest gathering of secular students in the country. For students and the entire secular community, this unique conference experience blends amazing speakers, grassroots organizing, and leadership enrichment, with a secular perspective.
The best way to ensure a secular future is to invest in secular youth. Imagine when you were a student having a unique opportunity like this conference to network with other students, develop your leadership skills, and strengthen your secular values.
We recognize that not every student is in a position where they can be open about their secularism, and we are working to change this. When you donate, you enable our students to live out their secular activism. You amplify their voices, help tell their stories, and reward them for their hard work. Some of our students’ families do not support them because they are nonreligious. Many of our students do not come from families who can afford to travel across the country. You may be the difference between a student being able to attend the national conference, or not.
