Hi, name is Rafael Lopez!
I am a graduate student at Western Illinois University pursuing a master's degree in physics. I am also a member of the Illinois National Guard and WIU ARMY ROTC Program. I have a deep passion for understanding the universe, such as understanding the exact nature of dark matter. I also have a deep passion for public service and for becoming a leader in the US ARMY.
I am grateful for the leadership opportunities that the Secular Student Alliance had offered ever starting when I co-founded a chapter of the SSA at my alma mater UIS to being recognized with the 2023 Distinguished Leadership Award to now being appointed the President of the Secular Student Alliance at Western Illinois University and of the mentorship offered by the members such as Christian Loyo and humanist chaplain Anthony Cruz and the individuals through my connection with the SSA such as the humanist chaplain Shristee Hooku. Their guidance and support have enriched me and helped me become a better leader.
Absolutely any amount can help; from covering plane fare, lodging, and registration costs.
Thank you for giving young leaders like myself the opportunity to learn and grow possible.
The Secular Student Alliance conference is the largest gathering of secular students in the country. For students and the entire secular community, this unique conference experience blends amazing speakers, grassroots organizing, and leadership enrichment, with a secular perspective.
The best way to ensure a secular future is to invest in secular youth. Imagine when you were a student having a unique opportunity like this conference to network with other students, develop your leadership skills, and strengthen your secular values.
We recognize that not every student is in a position where they can be open about their secularism, and we are working to change this. When you donate, you enable our students to live out their secular activism. You amplify their voices, help tell their stories, and reward them for their hard work. Some of our students’ families do not support them because they are nonreligious. Many of our students do not come from families who can afford to travel across the country. You may be the difference between a student being able to attend the national conference, or not.
